Does the DJ/MC use sound equipment suitable for your occasion?
There is a big difference between the audio equipment you have at home and the equipment the professional DJ/MC uses. Professional audio equipment is built to go on the road day in and day out. Be sure to ask about the sound equipment — even if you aren't "stereo smart" you'll be able to tell the difference.
Can the DJ/MC provide written agreements and referrals from previous clients?
All terms of the agreement should be in writing to avoid any complications at a later date. This ensures you that the DJ/MC will show up. If you don't have a contract, there's a good chance they might find a higher-paying job and give you the slip. References are also an important part of any service business, and your DJ/MC should be able to provide current names and phone numbers.
Will the DJ/MC be suitably dressed for the occasion?
It is important that your entertainer looks the part by dressing in formal or semi-formal attire, according to your theme. Don't assume the DJ/MC will be properly dressed — ask what he or she will be wearing.
Is the DJ willing to discuss music selections ahead of time, and take requests on the night?
A professional DJ/MC should be willing to listen to your ideas and incorporate them into the event, and play requests where they are appropriate. Beware of services that have you fill out a song request list — often that is the only music they bring. Does the DJ/MC know the proper etiquette and procedure for your type of function?
A professional DJ/MC will become involved in the planning of your function and be prepared to handle any announcements or special events on the day. A guideline of the formalities should be discussed ahead of time and supplied to you in writing before your wedding night.
Will the DJ/MC arrive on time?
Make sure your entertainment is set up before any guests arrive and ready to start when you want them to. Ask whether the DJ/MC has ever cancelled shows in the past — if they have, they may be double-booking and taking the event that pays the most.
Can the DJ/MC supply backup equipment or a replacement DJ/MC in an emergency?
If the DJ/MC does not carry a backup system and the sound fails, the party is over. With a backup system, the party is only interrupted for a few minutes. Even professional equipment can fail on occasion — and make sure the DJ/MC has a backup plan in case of illness or accident.
Will the DJ/MC play music at an appropriate level?
The biggest concern voiced by prospective clients is volume. A professional DJ/MC keeps the volume at a level appropriate for the guests, especially during cocktails and the dinner hour.
Can't I just have a friend play music from a tablet or phone?
You would most likely spend a lot of money renting the components and be disappointed with the results. Devices are no substitute for a professional entertainer creating a show designed for you and your guests — with proper flow, atmosphere and beat mixing. Your DJ/MC has greater impact and control of the dance floor than any other form of entertainment.
Does the DJ/MC return calls and emails promptly?

Is the DJ/MC willing to meet with us and present their services?
The best way to judge a prospective DJ/MC is an in-person meeting — it lets you judge appearance, manners, speaking ability and knowledge of receptions and music. A professional DJ should be friendly, personable and easy to talk with, able to explain the basic order of events and their strategy for making your reception unique. A true professional is flexible and always has more than one way to accomplish a goal.
Will it be the person we meet at the consultation who performs at our event?
This is the most common complaint about the DJ industry: the person you meet turns out NOT to be the performer who does your show. Ask up front, before you sign a contract, whether the person you interview will be the actual performer.
What should I expect in an agreement in writing?
The agreement should include: the name of the DJ and the person responsible for payment; the venue name, address, date and times; the details of services provided by both parties; the total price; when the balance is due; and overtime details. Usually a 50% booking fee and a signed agreement are required to book your date.
What documents should a professional DJ/MC show you?
A running sheet, a sample copy of the agreement, a schedule of pricing information and a song selection sheet for formalities at weddings — or a willingness to take your requests at the interview stage.
Does the DJ/MC have a desire to please their client?
There are two approaches: a "cookie cutter" formula show, or flexible planning where you choose the special events you want and 10–20 songs your guests will appreciate, with the DJ balancing your preferences against those of your guests. The flexible approach is what more experienced entertainers use.
